Landscape Design: Rousena Hoag, ASLA

Project Description:

During our time residing in Thailand, our family experienced the profound impact of losing close friends, particularly those of our children. Thailand and thirteen other countries were hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and Tsunami, which took hundreds of thousands of lives. In the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, we joined efforts at the airport to assist survivors, facilitating communication with their families and finding accommodations.

Subsequently, I was commissioned to design a Memorial Garden commemorating both the lives lost and the survivors of this devastating event. The Memorial Garden was thoughtfully conceived as a contemplative journey through family memories, offering a space for meaningful remembrance. The design process proved to be particularly challenging, yet it evolved into a transformative healing experience that continued throughout both the design and construction phases.

Prayer Garden

Location: Phoenix, AZ, USA

Client: DSBC

Landscape Design:  Rousena Hoag, ASLA

Project Description:

Desert Springs Baptist Church envisioned creating a tranquil urban sanctuary that offers individuals a peaceful retreat for reflection during their daily activities. The thoughtfully curated southwestern landscaping, featuring indigenous plants, natural boulder formations, and serene water features, establishes an atmosphere conducive to meditation and contemplation. Strategic placement of mature trees provides shaded seating areas, while an intuitive pathway system guides visitors through the space. The garden’s design incorporates a perimeter stucco wall on one side and maintains a visual connection to the sanctuary through an expansive glass window.

The garden’s entrance, positioned adjacent to the main sanctuary doors, showcases refined southwestern architectural elements, establishing an intimate courtyard that conveys both sophistication and hospitality.
